Sounds Old to Me: 19 More New Songs with a Vintage, Throwback Vibe

new-songs-sound-old-nostalgia-diaries

Earlier this year, we shared with you a list of songs that sounded vintage, old, and retro—in spite of the fact that they were made only within the last few years. (Missed it? Check out Music Monday: 19 New Songs That Sound Vintage! AND BONUS! You can also check out our list of 21 New Songs That  Totally Sound Like They’re From the 1980’s!)

Before we even published that blog post, we had to admit it was one of our favorite Music Monday posts yet, because there’s just something about listening to a recently released song that just feels like it was crafted in a different era, don’t you think? Most of those songs, even within the first few notes, transported us back to yesteryear, proving that music truly can transcend time and place. We all have those songs. You know the ones: They’re the songs of our past, the ones that we discovered or listened to during pivotal times in our lives—the so-called turning points—that became so much a part of us that their words somehow became our own. They are the ones that played a part in shaping us into who we are today. They are the ones that we hear now that immediately transport us back to those days where we were evolving, where we were becoming, where we were discovering the parts of ourselves that just couldn’t wait to come alive. (Fun fact: Closer to Fine is one of mine.)

Our friend Megan Smidt knows all about this phenomenon, and she’s with us here today at The Nostalgia Diaries sharing her own Music Monday playlist, 5 Songs That Helped Make Me the Woman I Am Today. Continue reading “5 Songs That Helped Make Me the Woman I Am Today | Megan Smidt”

18 Nostalgia-Inducing Songs for Easy Summer Nights

summer-nights-nostalgia-diaries

There’s just something about a summer night that so easily evokes nostalgia, don’t you think?

It’s that moment when the day finally starts to cool off, the moment the sun starts kissing the horizon, the moment the cicadas and crickets start singing. And in those moments, it’s so easy to think back to those easy, long-ago summer nights of no worries and no cares—ones that held things like slow sunset walks on the beach, sitting around roaring campfires with friends, swinging on a swing or rocking in a rocking chair on a porch as stars begin twinkling above, and running around and laughing in lush fields at dusk, trying to catch fireflies in a jar.

They were the moments that were so beautiful they practically shimmered. Continue reading “18 Nostalgia-Inducing Songs for Easy Summer Nights”

5 Songs That Remind Me of High School | Christina Pilat @ From Under a Palm Tree

Can you believe that the month of August starts this week? It seems like summer started just yesterday…

For most of us, the month of August is synonymous with back to school season. And the thing I always liked most about school starting up again was that it meant I got to go back to school shopping. There always was just something about picking out new notebooks and pencils and pens and deciding which kind of new backpack I wanted. Even when I was a teenager and started high school—a time when going back to school shopping shouldn’t have been nearly as exciting considering I’d already been doing it for 10 years or so—I still remember being beside myself to be able to get a new Eddie Bauer backpack. (Though I didn’t get a matching lunchbox or anything. That would have been so not cool: those were the years of basic, brown paper bagging it, for sure…) Continue reading “5 Songs That Remind Me of High School | Christina Pilat @ From Under a Palm Tree”

Another Trip Around the Sun: The Perfect Birthday Playlist

birthday-songs-nostalgia-diaries

It’s hard for me to believe, but my daughter Zoey turns 6 today. Because it seems like it was just yesterday she was an infant, taking her first steps and saying her first words, and then I blinked, and there she was, a bona fide little person, one who likes to try on makeup, takes care of me when I’m sick, and knows all the lyrics to her favorite songs. Time certainly does fly…

So in honor of her birthday today, it seemed only appropriate to share a playlist to designed to help someone celebrate their special day, no matter how old they may be or how many candles sit on top of their cake. (And remember: it’s not about how old are, it’s about how old you feel, because age is just a number, right?) Continue reading “Another Trip Around the Sun: The Perfect Birthday Playlist”
