11 Nostalgia-Driven Songs | Country

11 Nostalgia-Driven Songs | Country | The Nostalgia Diaries Blog

Okay, fellow Nostalgia Seekers, when I say country music, what’s the first thing you think about?  Slide guitars and fiddles? Banjos? Hee-Haw? Honky-Tonks? ? Do you avoid country music because you remember your parents listening to what you always thought were “twangy” country tunes? Does it remind you of long, hot road trips where the only thing you could find on the radio was a static-filled AM country station that your dad would leave on for hundreds of miles, when all you really wanted to do was sleep?

Certainly many of you may love those old country songs and artists. Patsy Cline. Charlie Pride. Dolly Parton. Hank Williams. Roy Clark. Glen Campbell. All left their mark on the  genre. But if you profess not to be a country fan, don’t judge the whole “country” genre by those older artists and their “twangy” sounds. Because if you avoid listening to all country music because you’re not a fan of Willie Nelson or George Strait, you are missing out on some of the most melodic, nostalgic, hit-you-right-in-the-feels music being recorded today. 5 Songs that Remind Me of Summers by the Pool | Becky Mollenkamp

summer-pool-nostalgia-diaries

Ahhhhh, it’s almost summertime (well, at least here in the Northern Hemisphere), and what better way to spend a hot summer day than at the pool! Whether it was a kiddie wading pool, an above-ground backyard pool, a public pool, a , or even just a , most of us remember those relaxing days where the only responsibility you had was to make sure you turned your lounge chair to keep your tan even.

Maybe you remember spritzing your hair with Sun-In, or slathering on the Hawaiian Tropic Oil.  Maybe you remember standing in line at the pool concession stand to get an ice-cold Coke or maybe candy (Laffy Taffy anyone?).  Maybe you remember being scared to go off the high dive for the first time, but then after that , you couldn’t stay off it for the rest of the day.  Maybe you remember seeing how long you could hold your breath, or seeing if you could swim all the way across the pool underwater.  Maybe you remember shivering under a huge striped beach towel or laying on the hot concrete to warm up.  Maybe you remember how red your eyes would get if you didn’t bring your goggles.

Diving for pennies… That … “No running!“… Cannonballs off the diving board… so many memories.

What Music Makes You Nostalgic? (Now accepting reader submissions!)

ipod-playlist-nostalgia

It’s no secret that music is one of the most powerful things that makes us nostalgic, but a radical new approach to analyzing how we receive and store music through the use of brain imaging reveals provides a deeper understanding to why this is the case. Through analysing the auditory cortex and grouping clusters of brain cells, scientists have identified that neural pathways that react almost exclusively to the sound of music. Regardless of the type of music, a distinct set of neurons tucked inside the listener’s auditory cortex fires in response, while other sounds — such as water running, a fire engine’s sirens, or the sounds of traffic — leave the musical circuits unmoved.

How cool is that?!

As awesome as all that science is, something we find equally as groovy is just how much fun it is to share these circuit-firing songs with one another. Over the past few months, we’ve been sharing our love of music with you through our Music Monday posts, and while they’ve not only helped us explore and understand just how powerful the connections between music and nostalgia really are, they’ve also encouraged us to think about the songs that we’ve loved and cherished over the years (and helped to bring them back to life!).

These posts have also encouraged our readers to share with us their own nostalgic favorites, and since we’ve loved hearing their stories, it got us thinking: why not let our readers share their nostalgic music memories on a larger scale?

So with that, dear friends, we’re excited to announce that we will now be accepting guest submissions for Music Monday!

Knowing that we were going to be opening up Music Monday to our readers this week, we decided to see what the experience would be like for a potential contributor. And since so much of my own musical nostalgia was created by the music my parents played for me as a child, I decided to reach out to them so they could contribute some of their own nostalgia-inducing songs. When Someone Says “10 Years Ago,” We Picture the 1990’s…

 nostalgia-diaries-iphone

Did you know that this year is the iPhone’s 10th birthday?

Just let that sink in for a minute.

Ten. Years. Old.

To be perfectly honest, we picture 10 years ago to be sometime in the 90’s, which then begs the question, how on earth is it already 2017?!!

Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld Convention in January of 2007, and by June of the same year, Apple released the iPhone to the public. Undoubtedly, the invention of the iPhone has changed our culture in more ways than one. Without it, we may never would have met Siri, been able to Facetime on the go, or have almost every emoji known to man available at our fingertips (Except for a duck. There are dragons and a unicorn and both bactrian AND dromedary camels, but still no duck. If someone knows why this is the case, please tell us. We’re dying to know.)

So for today’s Throwback Thursday, we decided to pick up our 11th Generation iPhones and Google our way back to 2007 to see what else was going on in the world of pop culture back then. It’s safe to say that 2007 was a year of music, money, and mayhem. Ahhh the nostalgia!
