Did you know that this year is the iPhone’s 10th birthday?
Just let that sink in for a minute.
Ten. Years. Old.
To be perfectly honest, we picture 10 years ago to be sometime in the 90’s, which then begs the question, how on earth is it already 2017?!!
Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld Convention in January of 2007, and by June of the same year, Apple released the iPhone to the public. Undoubtedly, the invention of the iPhone has changed our culture in more ways than one. Without it, we may never would have met Siri, been able to Facetime on the go, or have almost every emoji known to man available at our fingertips (Except for a duck. There are dragons and a unicorn and both bactrian AND dromedary camels, but still no duck. If someone knows why this is the case, please tell us. We’re dying to know.)
So for today’s Throwback Thursday, we decided to pick up our 11th Generation iPhones and Google our way back to 2007 to see what else was going on in the world of pop culture back then. It’s safe to say that 2007 was a year of music, money, and mayhem. Ahhh the nostalgia!
January 2007: Aside from the iPhone announcement, Oprah opens the $40 million Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg, South Africa, with celebrity attendees including Mariah Carey, Spike Lee, and Mary J. Blige. Nine months later the school is the center of controversy after a dorm matron is accused of abuse.
February 2007: The beginning of Britney Spears’ year long breakdown. After checking herself into – and then out of – rehab, Britney stops by a salon and shaves own head after a stylist refuses to do it for her.
March 2007: Elton John plays Madison Square Garden for the 60th time to celebrate his 60th Birthday, setting a record for the most concerts at that venue by any artist. R.E.M., Patti Smith, and Van Halen are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
April 2007: After triple-bypass surgery and six weeks off the air, Regis Philbin returns to Live with Regis and Kelly. He officially leaves the show in 2011. April also brought the beginning of the devastating global financial crisis, when New Century Financial Corp., a leading subprime mortgage lender, files for bankruptcy.
May 2007: For the first time in 20 years, The Police reunites to kick off their world tour in Vancouver. 2007 also brought other memorable musical reunions, including Genesis, Van Halen with David Lee Roth, and Led Zeppelin.
June 2007: After serving 23 days (yes days) in prison for violating probation and driving without a license, Paris Hilton stops by Larry King’s studio to discuss her “traumatic experience.”
July 2007: 10 days after the movie version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sets an opening-day record of $44.2 million, the seventh and final book of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is released. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sets its own record, selling $8.3 million copies during its first day on the shelves.
August 2007: Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron’s record by hitting his 756th home run. Later that year, he was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for earlier grand jury testimony in the government’s steroid investigation. The perjury charges were dropped, and his conviction of obstruction of justice was overturned in 2015.
September 2007: Whoopi Goldberg takes over the seat Rosie O’Donnell left empty upon her departure from The View earlier in May.
October 2007: After hosting 6,586 episodes of The Price Is Right, Bob Barker retires at the age of 83. Drew Carey takes over the microphone and the show’s signature catchphrase, “Come on down!”
November 2007: The Writers Guild of America goes on strike, causing thousands of layoffs and halting production of all network scripted series. Later in the month, 68 years after the release of The Wizard of Oz, seven of the actors who played Munchkins receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
December 2007: After going their separate ways in 2000, the Spice Girls launch their reunion tour in Vancouver, Canada. This nostalgia-filled extravaganza comes 3 weeks after the launch of their Greatest Hits album.

Yes 10 yrs ago should be 1990’s instead of 2000’s.. its crazy how the years are just passing us by.. 10 yrs ago I had a 7 month old.. holy crap yeah I’m getting old. LOL! 🙂
In 2007 I was still a few years away from having an iPhone. 2007 was a big one for me as it as the year I graduated college.
Oh my gosh, you’re right. I totally flashback to the 90s when someone says “10 years ago….” HOW CRAZY that I was finishing up college 10 years ago! Where does the time go?!
Haha this is so so funny & so true!! I really have totally written off the early 2000’s and just picture the 90s! Also, how crazy that in 2007 that Harry Potter movie & book set records!
Ahh, the 2000s. What a time to be alive haha! I remember when the iphone first came out and they had that huge controversy of people getting bills for $300+. I thought the iphone was the most ridiculous thing ever and no one would ever want to buy one. ANDDDD now I have one.
I had just met my future husband and I was serving in a restaurant! You’re right, I immediately thought about the 90’s when you said 10 years ago– not 2007! Yikes!
It is CRAZY to think about ten years ago being 2007. Like you I keep picturing the 90s, ha! I didn’t get an iPhone until 2011. It took me a little while I guess! In 2007 I was just happy to have a phone with a slide out keyboard for easier texting! I remember Britney’s meltdown quite well. And the Writer’s Strike.
I didn’t get an iPhone until 2016 and the only reason I crossed over to the dark side was because I wanted a better camera. I still refuse to believe it’s 2017.

I used blackberry because back then I was in the corporate world. But I fought it because I was also a creative director and used Mac for computer. Never go back! Lol Oh how time flies. Life is good

Sadly enough, I can hardly remember. We were stationed in El Paso, having just been reassigned from Germany. I definitely had a Nokia flip phone!
I know! I’m still coming to terms with folks born in 1999 being actual real live adults. I wasn’t an early adopter but I did love my first iPhone x

I can’t believe that it’s been 10 years since the iPhone was released–that’s insane! In 2007, I was auditioning for the conservatory where I started off in college, and I read my acceptance email on a classmate’s iPhone. I was so nervous and then excited that I didn’t even understand what the piece of technology allowing me to access the internet from the palm of my hand was! The next time I interacted with an iPhone was in 2009, and I thought that they were a little absurd. 10 years later and I’m married to a former Apple Genius, and I love my Apple products so much that I have an Apple Watch, an iPhone that’s slowly replacing my camera, and 2 laptops!
It’s funny but I really DO think of the 90’s when someone says 10 years ago. It’s crazy that it was 2007!! Interesting facts though. I actually had a flip phone for the LONGEST time. I’ve only had an iphone for a year or two? Not long.

Oh, this brings back some memories! It is so true about thinking ten years ago was the 1990’s! We were watching the ’90’s special on TV recently and things were very different! Ten years ago, I eloped with my hubby, so 2007 was a special year for us. After we eloped, I used by Blackberry to text everyone I knew. I did not even have Facebook back then! Thank you for taking me back, as always!
In 2007, I was 2 years our of college, had highlights, an amazing closet of Express clothing, NO wrinkles, not a care in the world, but my boyfriend (now husband). I was born in 83, so I’m loke a fringe millennial. I remember dial up, beepers, massive cell phones with only two colors on the screen, Napster, MySpace and a newly launched Facebook (then for colleges only). I remember a million glitter bracelets. Wallet chains, ball bearing necklaces, hemp jewerly, patches on everything, bellbottom jeans, Airwalks, Vans and Steve Madden shoes.
In 2007 I was doing my student teaching internship (yeah teaching for free for a year). And trying to find a job, which back then, finding a job was like finding a needle in a haystack. I have never had an Iphone, and remember when texts cost 10 cents to send.
2007 was a crazy time. I was just finishing my bachelor’s degree and my husband and I were in our first year of marriage! I don’t think we got iPhones until version 4 because we were just starting out.
OMG this post is magical…LOL. I seriously feel super old now. I remember crazy ass B when she shaved her head like it was yesterday. And the iphone is 10? Didn’t I just get my first one like 2 years ago? haha

Time flies! I can’t believe all of that was 10 years ago. I recently met with friends who I hadn’t seen in awhile. Thats when I realized so much had changed! It’s amazing how quickly the years go by before we even realize it.
