National Twinkie Day 2017

The world breathed a collective sigh of relief in 2013 after the makers of Twinkies started making that spongy yellow log of goodness again following a 10-month hiatus.  It had been a tense time for confectionery consumers; Hostess was in the throes of bankruptcy and a bakers’ strike and the possibility that we would never see a cellophane-wrapped package of Hostess Twinkies again threatened to rip a hole in the space-time continuum.

Okay, well, maybe it wasn’t THAT big of a deal, but for people who grew up with Twinkies as the go-to lunch box dessert, the threatened extinction of Twinkies no doubt sparked up all kinds of nostalgic memories of grade school days gone by.

Twinkies are a national icon and a staple of pop culture. Movies like Zombieland and Ghostbusters use them for comic relief.

Musical artists , , , , and others reference Twinkies in their lyrics.

Even DC and Marvel Comics teamed up with Hostess for an ad campaign of super-hero proportions beginning in the mid 1970’s.

And you will find Twinkie references in The Simpsons and South Park episodes.

So of course today, being National Twinkie Day, we think you should go out and buy a box of Hostess Twinkies and enjoy that spongy yellow cake and white cream filling.

Because who knows, there may be a day when Twinkie the Kid rides off into the sunset for good…

  1. I was a Twinkie kid. My mom would buy a box as a special treat. Like field trip lunches at school! I tweeted, everyone should celebrate Twinkie Day!

  3. Awesome post! I remember the mad rush to purchase Hostess products a few years back. I went just to say I did. Do you know what the first product was at our Wal-mart that sold out? Twinkies!

  4. I haven’t had a Twinkie in probably 20 years. My parents rarely bought them so I’ve only enjoyed them a few times in my life but this seriously makes me want to go buy a box!

  7. I seriously don’t remember the last time I had a Twinkie. As much as I would love to scarf one, I just really try not to eat processed foods. Try being the key word 🙂

  10. There really is a National Day for everything! I loved Twinkies as a kid, but can’t tell you the last time I had one. I don’t remember that ad from ’85 at all…almost looks like it was one from the 60’s. Great memories!
