It’s May, It’s May! The lusty month of May!
Well, actually, May is more than half over, but May is the quintessential month of Spring (at least sitting here in the Northern Hemisphere it is). So we thought it would be good to put together another fun collection of springtime music on this May Monday… These are songs that have to do with spring, songs that remind us of spring, songs that feel like spring, and songs that will likely put a spring in your step and maybe, just maybe, put a little love in your heart.
Speaking of love, did you watch the fabulous Royal Wedding this past weekend? Meghan Markle looked gorgeous, and Prince Harry looked dashing as ever. Springtime weddings can be tricky of course, as the unpredictable weather can be a challenge. Here in Colorado, it could be snowing in May. Or it could be 80 degrees. Right now, it’s 50 and rain… But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, of course, experienced made-to-order wedding weather—crisp and clear with “wall-to-wall sunshine” as one meteorologist predicted.
The perfect spring weather, we’d say. Continue reading “Music Monday | 19 Songs For Your Spring Mix Tape + BONUS: Spring Mix Salad Recipes!”
This is the time of year nostalgia really begins to develop into a full-fledged obsession, and why shouldn’t it? Christmas is only a little more than a month away, and I’ve got snowflakes, Santa Claus, and silver bells on my mind.
I know, I know, we can’t forget about Thanksgiving, the forgotten holiday. And we shouldn’t, of course, but I gotta say, Thanksgiving doesn’t hold the same nostalgic memories that Christmas does… Perhaps because Christmas is really a full season that dominates the entire month of December with 24-hour Christmas music radio stations, houses covered in lights, and shopping, shopping, shopping.
Okay, so there is one Thanksgiving memory that sticks out—the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Every year I would get up to watch that spectacle at 7:00 a.m. with my mom, who also loved it. The floats, the marching bands, and those fantastic giant balloons. It’s nostalgic for a lot of people, and we wrote more about it on this post last year (we’ve updated the post with this year’s viewing information). Snaps and crackles emanating from the fireplace combine with clicks and pops from the album that rotates round and round on the old console record player in our living room.
It’s getting on towards Christmas. Well, okay… really it’s just the start of November and the Christmas tree won’t even be going up until after Thanksgiving. But as a kid, November was the start of winter, and winter meant snow, and snow meant Christmas.
So, yeah, it’s getting on towards Christmas. Snowflakes are falling beyond the picture window in a silent dance to Earth, and I’m listening to the new Carpenters Christmas Album, combing through the Sears Wish Book Catalog. I flip past the housewares and lingerie sections to get to the good stuff: train sets… slot car tracks… Tonka trucks… Star Wars figures.
This was the year Santa was going to bring me a Tyco train set—the one with a diesel engine, a couple of brown boxcars, a long passenger car, and a red caboose. It was my dream to start building a monster railroad layout, and this little set was going to be the start to fulfilling that dream.
It was going to be magnificent. Continue reading “Losing Nostalgia… And Finding It Again”
Think of some of your favorite childhood treats, the ones that induce all sorts of food nostalgia. Do they involve peanut butter and chocolate? What about marshmallows and graham crackers? Oh, and how about the quintessential childhood treat: Ice cream? If so, then we think you’ll go crazy for this Easy No-Churn Peanut Butter Chocolate S’Mores Ice Cream.
You can mix up this Easy No-Churn Ice Cream with only 3 ingredients (no ice cream maker necessary!), forgo any mix-ins, slide it in the freezer, and spoon up some delicious vanilla ice cream in a matter of hours, but why stop there? My daughter and I had fun mixing in some of our favorite sweet treats to come up with this perfect summer-inspired flavor, Peanut Butter Chocolate S’Mores Ice Cream. Hints of this classic, summer campfire treat are swirled throughout a rich, creamy vanilla base along with decadent ribbons of peanut butter and chocolate sauce. Sittin’ with your friends as y’all reminisce
About the days growin’ up and the first person you kissed
And as I think back makes me wonder how the
smell from a grill can spark up nostalgia.

What do you think of when you think of summer? Sunshine? Vacation? Taking it slow? Swimming at the pool? Running through sprinklers? Playing at the park? Summer camp? Walking barefoot in the grass? Drinking out of a hose? Watching the clouds? Riding bikes? Laying out to work on your tan? Going to the movies? Chilling out watching MTV in a cool basement?
