The Nostalgic ’80s Just Got A Little Bit More Awesome

Little Billy 1

Oh, the nostalgia for our younger years…

Today I’m taking you back to the decade of excess and decadence.

The 1980’s.

I was a teen in the ‘80s and soaked up the gaudy, gorgeous culture of that decade. Let’s take a quick look:

Music

Did you listen to arena rock? Journey? REO Speedwagon? Night Ranger? Or maybe you loved the Hair Bands. Def Leppard? Poison? Motley Crue? Bon Jovi? Or perhaps your tastes were more along the lines of The Thompson Twins, or Duran Duran, Howard Jones, or the dozens of other New Wave groups. Or maybe you liked Heartland Rock: Seger, Mellencamp, Springsteen, or Petty. Or did you prefer The Cure (Post Punk or R.E.M (College Rock)? Maybe it was Madonna? Michael Jackson? The Bangles?

Fashion

Then, of course, was the ‘80s fashion… The girls wore mini skirts, leg warmers, and stirrup pants, while the guys pulled on their parachute pants and Members Only jackets. The ‘80s found willing consumers of brands like Benetton, Coca-Cola clothing, Esprit, Ocean Pacific, Jordache, and Swatch. There were big everything: big earrings, big glasses, big sweaters, big shoulder pads, and big hair.

Movies

Hollywood entertained us with oodles of movies we still love: Ghostbusters, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Indiana Jones, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles, St. Elmo’s Fire, Top Gun, The Little Mermaid, Willow, The Karate Kid, Footloose, E.T., Weird Science, The Goonies, Back to the Future, and The Breakfast Club are only a few.

TV

Then there was television. Ahh, the wonderful world of ‘80s television… Cheers and The Cosby Show. Alf and The Golden Girls. The A-Team and Growing Pains. The Wonder Years and Who’s the Boss. Family Ties and Knight Rider. Miami Vice and Perfect Strangers. Moonlighting and Silver Spoons. Quantum Leap and St. ElsewhereDynasty and Designing Women. The Fall Guy and Fraggle Rock.

And, oh yes… Everybody wanted their MTV.

Channeling Nostalgia | The Music of Television

First things first: A big thanks to Corey for trusting me to take over The Nostalgia Diaries while she vacations with her family in the tropical oasis that is Toledo, Ohio. I’ve never vacationed in Toledo, but I’ve spent a bit of time in other parts of Ohio and the Midwest and frankly, I’m a big fan of laid-back Midwestern summers.

My grandparents lived in Eastern South Dakota along the Missouri River, and every July or August my parents would take my brother and me on a road trip to spend a couple of weeks in Yankton and Vermillion, South Dakota.  To this day, I can still remember the enveloping heat of the heavy, humid air and the rich smell of dark fertile soil in fields of 7-foot tall stalks of sweet corn. Not a lot of that in Wyoming where I grew up, so the feel of the Midwest was always a striking change.

And I loved it.

I have not been back to South Dakota in years, yet thinking about it now sparks many nostalgic memories of my youth—a youth filled with the smells and sounds and sights of summer’s simple pleasures: hot concrete and cool chlorine-infused swimming pool water, the buzz of cicadas and the sad song of mourning doves, the blur of telephone poles and trees zipping past the car window ticking off the miles on the long road trip east. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (2017)

First appearing in the 1941 comic, All Star Comics #8, Wonder Woman has since seen plenty of action through the decades, fighting an assortment of bad guys from Nazis to supervillans. She always prevailed, not only because of her exceptional fighting ability, but also because she had some handy super hero hardware to go along with her super hero patriotic tights (her sexy — or as some would say, sexist — version of the typical super suit worn by male super heroes). Bulletproof bracelets and shield, a telepathic tiara, and the Lasso of Truth have been mainstays to her crime-fighting arsenal.  Add to that her invisible plane, and you have a super hero that has instilled wonder, in every sense of the word, in generations of DC Comics fans and critics alike. (She has sparked continuing debate in some interesting articles such as this one and this one and this one). Continue reading “Wonder Woman: A Nostalgic Hero Returns to the Big Screen”

“Everyone jump upon the Peace Train,
Come on, come on, come on…” – Cat Stevens

April is all about peace and acceptance and over here at The Nostalgia Diaries (and Corey’s Everyday Nostalgia post yesterday told you about her journey to make peace with where she is in her life, and a week ago she wrote about finding peace in being enough). So today we decided that we should put together a Music Monday post of artists who have crafted songs about harmony, tranquility, happiness, and love. In a word:

Peace. Continue reading “Jump on the Peace Train: 11 Songs About Peace”
