My daughter Zoey’s two-year-old smile spreads wide across her face as I lean over and unbuckle her from her carseat.
“Are you ready for some fun?” I ask.
Her response of a giggle fills the car as I lift her free and blow a raspberry kiss against the high curve of her little cheek. We emerge into the brightness of the day and then stand still for a moment, blinking as our eyes adjust to the hot, overhead sun.
It’s late August, and Zoey and I are in Ohio visiting my parents. For me, this trip has become more of a necessity than a luxury given the fact that everything back home seems to be coming apart at the seams: Life has been hard, love has all but faded, and my heart has become a veritable wasteland.
I had miraculously managed to stay relatively strong in spite of the circumstances, but after we boarded the plane and began our trip back East, exhaustion finally swept over me. Continue reading “Week 35: Seasons of Love | Everyday Nostalgia”
There you are at the pool or beach, lounging in your swimsuit, sipping a cold drink (preferably with a little umbrella in it, right?), and then you feel it: a small bead of sweat trickling down your back. You’re hot, but you don’t care, because guess what? The sun feels good, and a cool dip of water—that blissful sweet relief—is just a few feet away. Ah, summer, how we love you…
Summer is a season where all of your senses have a fun time coming out to play. Last week we had fun taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane with our favorite 7 Simple Nostalgic Sounds of Summer, and for this week’s Throwback Thursday post, we’ve rounded up 17 Nostalgic Signs of Summer—the things that emerge in all their glory during this happy season of sun. And for some added fun, we’re sharing an interesting fact about each of them in case you need a good ice-breaker at your next summer BBQ or get-together (Just make sure to use them sparingly—you don’t want to be that guy). When I look back on my fond memories of summertime as a child, I tend to go into a little bit of a nostalgic, sensory overload:
I remember the way summer tasted… a delicious mixture of ice-cold sun tea, juicy watermelon, plump strawberries, delicious grilled hot dogs, and sweet, melting Popsicles.
I remember the way summer smelled… a potent potpourri of coconut-laced sunscreen, smoky, toasty campfires, newly cut lawns, and freshly fallen rain.
I remember the way summer felt… an intoxicating combination of lush, soft grass, the hot, hard concrete of a pool’s edge, warm, gritty sand, and freezing cold water sprayed from hoses, Slip ‘n Slides, and sprinklers.
And I also remember the way summer sounded. Continue reading “7 Simple Nostalgic Sounds of Summer”
Here at The Nostalgia Diaries, we’ve been having a great time celebrating summer. Over the past few months, we took a trip down memory lane with Becky Mollenkamp’s 5 Songs that Remind Me of Summers by the Pool and our own Nostalgic Summer BBQ Playlist. We encouraged you to get a little more sunshine, but also reminded you to wear sunscreen when doing so. And in case you may have missed it, all the way back in February we brought you our Sunshine & Summertime playlist, which featured 17 Songs to Ease Your Wintertime Woes (check it out—these songs are perfect for lazy, hazy days!)
We think all this talk of summer goes to show you can never get too much of this season, especially when it comes to nostalgia. Because who isn’t nostalgic for this time of year, the one where fun times were always around the corner, just waiting to be discovered?
Today’s Music Monday playlist is brought to us from Alleyn Harned (a pretty rockin’ college friend of Corey’s), and we’re totally digging his awesome throwback Summertime Mix-Tape. We think you will, too, so crank these tunes up—they’re sure to get you in the groove today. Continue reading “Summertime Mix-Tape | Alleyn Harned”
Sittin’ with your friends as y’all reminisce
About the days growin’ up and the first person you kissed
And as I think back makes me wonder how the
smell from a grill can spark up nostalgia.
